両親と共にRosemary Clooney, Perry Comoに聞き入り、ニューヨーク発のラジオ番組"The Top 40 sounds" で
Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Brenda Leeを聞いていたとのこと。そして、将来は体操の教師を夢見ていた。
1970年、初のヒット"Snowbird"が米ビルボード誌HOT100で8位まで上昇。"Love Song."で1974年度グラミー賞の最優秀カントリー女性歌手賞、"You Needed Me."（ランディ・グッドラム作）で1978年度グラミー賞の最優秀ポップ女性歌手賞を受賞。
"You Needed Me."は米ビルボード誌HOT100で第1位を記録した。これはカナダ出身の女性ソロ・シンガーとしては史上初の快挙である。
これ以降も"I Just Fall in Love Again" (1979), "Shadows in the Moonlight" (1979), "Broken Hearted Me" (1979), "Could I Have This Dance" (1980), "Blessed Are the Believers" (1981), "A Little Good News" (1983), "Just Another Woman in Love" (1984), "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" (1984), and "Now and Forever (You and Me)" (1986).バラードを中心にヒット曲を連発した。
2007年にはCeline Dion,Sarah Brightmanら豪華なゲスト陣を迎えたアルバム“Duets - Friends & Legends”を発表。現在もカナダをベースとして現役で活動中。
